Throughout the world this festival is celebrated a little differently. Some places are decorated with Christmas trees, while in others people are waiting for Santa Claus. Here, we share with you all the different Christmas habits that we have gathered from around the world.

Christmas All Around The World - Austria

Austria

According to tradition Santa Claus comes on December the 6th and treats the good children with walnuts, apples and sweets. On December 24th Jesus brings the little children gifts and a Christmas tree. The children eagerly wait for a bell to ring as only then can they enter the room that hides the candles, ornaments and the Christmas tree decorated with candy .

Germany

At Christmas time Germans go to great lengths to decorate their houses. They attach coloured bulbs or mounted colour images to wooden framed windows which show up very well in the dark winter nights. Nativity scenes are to be found in most apartments. The children write a Christmas gift list decorated with drawings which are placed in the windows overnight. On top of each list they put sweets and candies to make sure that Santa Claus finds it.

France

The smaller children polish their shoes near the fireplace on Christmas Eve so Santa Claus can put their gifts into them. The older children go with the adults to a midnight mass and then return home for a Christmas supper.

Christmas All Around The World - Italy

Italy

Perhaps on first hearing this it sounds rather incredible, but Italian children are not familiar with Santa Claus! Their good witch, Befana, visits them and not in December, but on January 6th! This is interesting because the inhabitants of Italy are deeply religious, but there was still a place in their hearts for the beautiful little witch who would take away the old and the evil and bring something new and good instead. Italy has a long tradition of Bethlehem games. Not only do the churches have amateur theaters and children's performances, but people also create their own little cribs at home.

Scandinavia

If someone were to ask a Nordic person about where Santa Claus originally comes from, there would surely be a sharp dispute. From the Swedish to the Finns everyone thinks differently on this topic. The Icelanders may even believe that other people can’t claim anything because they have the most Santa Clauses of all, exactly thirteen Santa Clauses to be precise. In Scandinavia festive preparations begin in November so they certainly do not leave gift gathering, decorating or preparations to the last minute. And they don’t mind a walk in the woods to gather all the fruit which is an indispensable part of their orchard cakes.

England

Children write letters to Santa in time for Christmas. They then throw them into the fireplace so that by riding the smoke up the chimney they travel to the Arctic. If the gift list catches on fire before it flies up and out you must write another one. Christmas specials include plum pudding, in which is hidden a small gift or coin. If you find it, you are supposed to be lucky. England also has a tradition which has its origin there that at Christmas time mistletoe was suspended above doorways.

The United States

As many ethnic groups are in America there are as many different ways to celebrate Christmas, but there are also similarities. For example, in December children go from house to house singing Christmas carols and at every house a small snack or a gift is given to them. Here Santa Claus brings gifts to children and hides them in their socks or shoes.

Australia

Instead of reindeers, Santa's sleigh is pulled by eight white kangaroos. The Christmas meal is consumed in open areas or parks. Then they go to the beach or play cricket in the backyard.

Christmas All Around The World - South-Africa

South-Africa

Here Christmas is in summer. Hearty lunch is eaten to celebrate and then they visit their friends and families and give Christmas boxes to each other, usually with some fun things hidden in them.

Kenya

The churches are decorated with ribbons, flowers, balloons and green plants. The festive meal is prepared over an open fire outdoors.
